YSM G196 vs Goulds 3196: The ASME B73.1 Envelope They Share and What Is Confirmed Before Order
The YSM G196 is a non-OEM ANSI/ASME B73.1 chemical process pump built to the Goulds 3196 dimensional pattern under ASME B73.1, in the same size and frame group as the Goulds STX, MTX, LTX and XLTX power ends. For the same B73.1 designation and frame it is built to the installation envelope the standard sets (flange size and position, shaft centreline height D, length CP, foot bolt pattern, input shaft), while hydraulics, impeller, materials, seal chamber and bearing frame are YSM’s own design. Interchange of a specific pump is confirmed against the nameplate and the installed pump drawing before order.
What “Goulds 3196 equivalent” means on this page
On ysmpumps.com the words “replacement”, “equivalent” and “interchangeable” refer to non-OEM pumps built to the named OEM dimensional pattern under ASME B73.1, same size and frame, confirmed against the nameplate and the installed pump drawing before order. Three things stay apart:
- What ASME B73.1 sets for the same designation: mounting dimensions, nozzle size and location, input shaft, baseplate and foundation bolt holes.
- What YSM designs: hydraulics, impeller, materials, seal chamber and bearing frame, compared on curves, certificates and drawings.
- What only the installed pump can tell: nameplate, GA drawing, coupling, rotation, seal and impeller trim, sent by the buyer for review.
From OEM literature: the Goulds 3196 was introduced in 1961, meets B73.1M and is offered on the i-FRAME power ends STi, MTi, LTi, XLTi and i17. STX, MTX, LTX and XLTX are legacy frame names as used in the aftermarket.
The G196: 24 general-purpose sizes on power ends for the Goulds STX, MTX, LTX and XLTX frame patterns; series maximums 7,000 US gpm (1,590 m3/h), 730 ft (223 m), 700 °F (371 °C), 375 psig (2,586 kPa); individual size, impeller diameter, material and seal arrangement set the limits for a given pump (G196 Series overview: frames, sizes and materials).
Goulds, 3196, i-FRAME, BigBore, TaperBore PLUS and ITT are trademarks of their owners. YSM Pumps is an independent non-OEM manufacturer, not affiliated with, endorsed by or a distributor for ITT Goulds Pumps; OEM model names are used only to identify the dimensional pattern.
What ASME B73.1 fixes: the shared installation envelope
The ASME B73.1 scope statement on asme.org aims for the same installation envelope for pumps of the same dimension designation: mounting dimensions, nozzle size and location, input shaft, baseplate and foundation bolt holes. Interchange of a specific pump is confirmed against the nameplate and the installed pump drawing before order. See ANSI/ASME B73.1 explained.
The standard works through designations (AA, AB, AC, A05 and so on to A120), each mapping to one or more hydraulic sizes. Published tables for the same designation can differ, so the certified drawing governs.
Size code: discharge x suction, then the nominal impeller diameter, in inches (3x4-8 is 3 in discharge, 4 in suction, 8 in impeller). Durco Mark 3 pattern pumps write suction first, so the designation, not the size string, is the comparison key.

CP: shaft coupling end to suction flange face. D: shaft centreline height above the underside of the feet. X: shaft centreline to discharge flange face. E1 and E2: full centre-to-centre spacing of the foot bolt holes across the shaft (ASME 2E1 and 2E2; 0 means a single hole on the centreline). F: distance along the shaft between the two bolt-hole rows. U: shaft diameter at the coupling. Y: discharge nozzle centreline to suction flange face. H: bolt-hole diameter.

- Nominal ASME B73.1 envelope dimensions by designation, in inches; not for construction. The certified drawing issued with the quotation governs.
- U depends on the power end, not only on the designation: 0.875 STX, 1.125 MTX, 1.875 LTX, 2.375 XLTX.
- AC does not appear in the 1991 dimension sheet, so its E1, E2, F and H are read from the certified drawing.
- For AA and AB one published manufacturer table gives F as 7.50 rather than 7.25; confirm F on the certified drawing.
- 17-inch sizes and 8x10-16H use the OEM i17 power end, whose coupling diameter is not published separately; these sizes are available on request and read U from the certified drawing.

Goulds 4x6-17 (A105) uses the i17 power end and is available on request, confirm against the nameplate and installed pump drawing.
Low-flow, self-priming and 17-inch sizes were developed after the original ASME B73.1 designation table was set, which is why the 1991 dimension table cited above has no entries for them (the 17-inch sizes in the table above are placed by designation from the Goulds brochure; their installation dimensions are confirmed on the certified drawing); where no current OEM table gives a designation either, as for Goulds 3x4-17 (available on request, confirm against the nameplate and installed pump drawing), installation dimensions come from the certified drawing.
Flange pressure class and facing, nozzle orientation, auxiliary connections, the installed pump’s rotation and the coupling (hub bore against the shaft extension U, keyway, spacer length) are read from the GA drawing and confirmed before order.
What is YSM’s own design: hydraulics, materials, seal chamber, bearing frame
As the site’s B73.1 explainer puts it, “B73.1 is a dimensional and mechanical standard, not a performance specification”.
Hydraulics. G196 coverage curves are YSM’s own and are on Technical Downloads; the buyer compares head, efficiency, NPSHr and BEP position at normal, minimum and maximum duty.
Impeller. Open impeller with external clearance adjustment on the 3196 pattern. The pattern and vane profile are YSM’s; where an impeller is re-patterned or reverse engineered, cast surfaces and vane profiles are digitised by 3D scanning or CMM and the hydraulics are checked against the pump curve.
Materials. Published G196 wet-end alloys: WCB, CF8M, CD4MCu, CN7M, Monel, Nickel, Hastelloy B and C, Titanium and Zirconium alloy; availability by component and size is confirmed at quotation. Shafts SAE 4140 or 316SS with sleeves in the wet-end alloy; bearing frames cast iron (ductile iron on the STX-pattern power end), adapters ductile iron. Higher alloys are produced on the same patterns as the stainless grades, so the alloy does not change the envelope; fit is still confirmed against the nameplate and the installed pump drawing.
Seal chamber. B73.1 fixes only a minimum seal chamber envelope. The G196 offers standard, large-bore and taper-bore chambers, corresponding to the Goulds standard bore, BigBore and TaperBore PLUS patterns (names used only as dimensional-pattern identifiers; fit confirmed against the nameplate and the installed pump drawing), plus a packed box; see Mechanical seals for process pumps.
Bearing frame and power end. SKF or equivalent bearings, labyrinth bearing isolators, sleeved or sleeveless shafts, power-end references G1119/G1201 (STX pattern) through G3119/G3201 (XLTX pattern).
Internal part-for-part fit. Fitting a G196 casing or impeller to a 3196 frame or shaft is outside the standard and is reviewed per part against the buyer’s drawing and Replacement ANSI pump parts and OEM part-number cross-reference.

Frame groups: Goulds STX / MTX / LTX / XLTX versus YSM G196 frames and sizes
MTX and LTX carry the same hydraulic sizes (designations A05 to A80), so a 3x4-13 does not identify the power end. The frame is read from the nameplate, serial record or bearing frame casting; it decides which YSM power end (G2xxx or GLTxxx), which power-end parts and which coupling-end U apply.
The G196 General Purpose, Low Flow, G3796 and G196 CV pumps, each built to its Goulds dimensional pattern, use G196 pattern power ends (see the Low Flow and G3796 pages for frames); part-level fit is confirmed per part number and drawing before order.

Nameplate and drawing data required to confirm interchange
Photograph both the pump and motor nameplates, not only the motor plate (How to read a pump nameplate and drawing). Interchange is confirmed against your nameplate data before any order is accepted; a reference number alone is not treated as a fit conclusion.
A nameplate cannot tell the current impeller trim, internal wear, every wetted material, seal-face materials, duty match or whether two internal parts interchange. Reverse engineering of pump parts from samples or drawings covers cases with no drawing. - Pump nameplate photographed: model, size, frame, serial number and material code readable.
- Designation identified from the size; frame read from the nameplate or bearing frame.
- D, CP and the foot and base bolt pattern checked against the GA drawing or measured on site.
- Nozzle size, class, facing, orientation and auxiliary connections read from the drawing or casing.
- Coupling hub bore, keyway and spacer length checked against U on the certified drawing for the confirmed power end.
- Rotation direction, viewed from the coupling end, confirmed against the casing arrow and motor; G196 standard rotation is clockwise, reverse-rotation builds on request.
- Impeller diameter as trimmed, duty point (normal, minimum, maximum), liquid data and NPSHa supplied.
- Seal make, model, cartridge or component, chamber type, flush plan and sleeve diameter recorded.
- Motor frame, power, speed and base bolt pattern recorded.
- Scope decided: complete pump, bare wet end or parts, with part numbers for any internal part.
Replacement scopes: complete pump, bare wet end or parts
Complete pump. A bare-shaft G196 built to the Goulds 3196 dimensional pattern under ASME B73.1. Whether the existing base, motor, coupling and piping can be retained is decided after the nameplate and installed pump drawing review. See G196 ANSI chemical process pump (product page).
Bare wet end. Casing, impeller and cover in the wet-end alloy, with a ductile iron adapter, fitted to an installed power end only after a part-level review of the casing-to-frame, impeller-to-shaft and cover-to-chamber interfaces.
Replacement parts. Part-for-part fit is outside B73.1. Wet-end and power-end parts are cross-referenced by OEM part number, and each part is confirmed against the nameplate, part number and drawing before order.
Lead times, warranty, payment and Incoterms are published on Commercial terms: lead time, warranty, payment, Incoterms. Export packing is non-fumigation wooden export cases, with small parts in inner cartons. Quotations follow a reviewed selection of size and frame, materials, sealing, scope and quantity, not a model name.
How YSM builds and verifies a G196 and what documents ship with it
The G196 is made to YSM’s own drawings and patterns at the company’s Zibo site of 3,000 m2, in operation since 2010 with about 35 staff; equipment is listed on the Factory review: Zibo site and equipment page.
YSM’s capabilities include casting simulation before pouring and 3D-printed sand cores and moulds.
The inspection steps published on Certifications and quality: inspection process are:
- Material verification by spectrometer or chemical analysis per heat.
- Hydrostatic test of pressure-containing parts.
- Dimensional inspection of machined parts and ASME B73.1 interface dimensions against the drawing, with the in-house CMM (Tornado NCA10158) for interface and fit dimensions.
- Dynamic balancing of all impellers.
- Performance testing of complete pumps on YSM’s own factory test benches (water medium, to 9,000 m3/h, 6 bar, 250 kW), with the test curve supplied on request.
- Final inspection.
Witness testing at the factory and third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas or TÜV are available on request. Material certificates, balance reports and hydrostatic test reports are issued with the order, a dimensional inspection report can be issued with the order, and the GA drawing is reviewed before manufacture.

Is the YSM G196 built to the Goulds 3196 dimensional pattern?
The G196 is a non-OEM ANSI/ASME B73.1 pump built to the Goulds 3196 dimensional pattern, in the same size and frame group. Hydraulics, materials and internals are YSM’s own design. Interchange is confirmed against the nameplate and the installed pump drawing before order, and that review decides whether the existing base, piping and coupling can be retained.
Does ASME B73.1 make a G196 interchangeable with a Goulds 3196?
The standard covers only the installation envelope, and a specific pump is still confirmed against the nameplate and the installed pump drawing before order. For the same designation the standard sets mounting dimensions, nozzle size and location, input shaft, baseplate and foundation bolt holes. It does not fix hydraulics, impellers, seal chambers, bearing frames or materials. Rotation, flange class, facing and nozzle orientation are read from the GA drawing.
Which Goulds 3196 dimensions does the G196 share?
For the same B73.1 designation the G196 is built to the same shaft centreline height D, coupling-end-to-suction length CP, foot bolt pattern and flange size and position. Nominal values by designation are in the dimension table on this page, and U also depends on the power end. The certified drawing issued with the quotation governs, and interchange is confirmed against the nameplate and the installed pump drawing before order.
Can I tell STX, MTX, LTX or XLTX from the pump size?
Only partly. STX sizes and the five G196 XLTX sizes belong to those frames; the OEM 8x10-16H and 17-inch sizes use the i17 power end (available on request, confirm against the nameplate and installed pump drawing); MTX and LTX carry the same sizes. Read the frame from the nameplate, serial record or bearing frame casting. The Goulds brochure gives nominal U as 1.125 in on MTX and 1.875 in on LTX; the G196 coupling-end diameter is read from the certified drawing.
I have an i-FRAME nameplate (STi, MTi, LTi, XLTi). Does that change the review?
No. Send the same nameplate data. An i-FRAME nameplate is mapped during review to the G196 power end referenced to the STX, MTX, LTX or XLTX pattern, and fit is still confirmed from the nameplate, GA drawing and coupling. Sizes on the i17 power end are available on request, confirm against the nameplate and installed pump drawing. i-FRAME is a trademark of its owner.
Will my existing mechanical seal fit a G196?
It is decided from the seal make and model, cartridge or component type, sleeve diameter, flush plan and seal chamber type, not from the pump model. B73.1 sets only a minimum seal chamber envelope. The G196 offers standard, large-bore and taper-bore chambers corresponding to the Goulds standard bore, BigBore and TaperBore PLUS patterns (names used only as dimensional-pattern identifiers); chamber and seal fit are confirmed against the nameplate and the installed pump drawing before order. Send the seal tag and a chamber photo for review with the pump selection.
Can G196 parts be fitted into an installed Goulds 3196 pump?
Part-for-part fit is outside the B73.1 standard. G196 casings, impellers, covers, adapters, frames, housings, shafts and sleeves are cross-referenced by OEM part number, and each part is confirmed against the nameplate, part number and drawing before order. A part number alone is not a fit conclusion, so send nameplate photos and the drawing with the part numbers.
What do I send to confirm interchange before ordering?
Photos of the pump and motor nameplates; model, size and frame; serial number; material code; impeller diameter; duty point and liquid data; seal details; rotation direction; coupling type and hub bore; and the GA drawing if available. If the nameplate is unreadable, send photos of the bearing frame, casing arrow and coupling plus measured D, nozzle sizes and flange bolt circles.
