G196 Series · General Purpose

The G196 is an ANSI/ASME B73.1 open-impeller chemical process pump for chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, primary-metals, food and beverage, and general industrial duties. This page carries the model-level record — the published series envelope, representative sizes, materials, installation-dimension drawings and the sectional parts sheets — and the selection itself is configured from the required duty point, liquid data, materials and seal arrangement against a reviewed, size-specific curve.

7,000 US gpm (1,590 m³/h)Flow, series maximum
730 ft (223 m)Head, series maximum
700 °F (371 °C)Temperature, series maximum

Series-level maximums for the general-purpose sizes; working pressure to 375 psig (2,586 kPa). Individual size, impeller diameter, material and seal arrangement set the limits for a given pump, confirmed on the reviewed, size-specific curve.

The G196 General Purpose in the YSM Pump Programme

The general-purpose model is the family default: the configuration reviewed first when a B73.1 open-impeller pump is the starting point and no special hydraulic constraint applies. It shares the STX, MTX, LTX and XLTX frame logic, the wet-end parts coverage and the review discipline of the wider G196 programme — what separates it from its low-flow sibling is the duty point it is designed to sit on, because a centrifugal pump runs where the pump curve and system curve intersect, not where the catalogue ends.

Low Flow

G196 Low Flow Process Pump

Dedicated low-flow sizes for duty points where a general-purpose selection would operate far left of best efficiency — throttling a larger pump into a small duty invites recirculation, vibration and a hotter seal environment. If the normal flow is specifically low, start from the low-flow page instead.

Quick Selection Summary

The envelope below matches the series-level published range on the G196 Series page; it frames what the family can reach, and the reviewed, size-specific curve decides what a given pump will do.

Important: these are series-level maximums, not guaranteed limits for every size. Final limits depend on selected size, speed, material, seal and operating conditions.

Design Features

Each feature is stated with the consequence a buyer should attach to it — a B73.1 pump is specified for its behaviour in service, not for a list of nouns.

Wet end

Open impeller with external adjustment and multiple casing, impeller and cover material options. As service wear opens the impeller clearance, the external adjustment restores it with the pump in place — recovering head and efficiency between overhauls without a wet-end strip-down.

Seal area

Standard, large-bore and taper-bore seal chambers, plus packed-box and mechanical-seal arrangements in the source parts structure. The chamber is the seal’s operating environment — volume, circulation and solids behaviour at the faces — so it is chosen together with the sealing plan, not after it.

Power end

SKF or equivalent bearings, labyrinth bearing isolators and multiple shaft or shaft-sleeve combinations. The bearing arrangement is conventional and documented, sourceable through normal industrial channels; non-contact isolators exclude wash-down water and process vapour without a rubbing lip that wears out.

Available Sizes and Hydraulic Coverage

G196 size codes read discharge × suction − nominal impeller diameter, in inches: a 3×4-8 discharges through 3 in, takes suction at 4 in and carries a nominal 8-inch impeller. STX carries the small hydraulics, MTX/LTX the mid-range and XLTX the high-flow end, so STX and XLTX follow from the size; the mid-range sizes run on either MTX or LTX, and for an installed pump that frame is read from the nameplate. Read the table as coverage, not commitment: adjacent sizes can both reach a duty point on paper, and only the reviewed, size-specific curve shows which one runs nearer best efficiency.

FrameGeneral-purpose sizes in current source
STX1×1.5-6, 1.5×3-6, 2×3-6, 1×1.5-8, 1.5×3-8
MTX / LTX2×3-8 through 4×6-13, including selected G and H variants
XLTX6×8-13, 8×10-13, 6×8-15, 8×10-15, 8×10-15G

Materials of Construction

Wetted-material selection is a chemistry decision before it is a commercial one. The reason the table refuses to map liquid names to alloys is that concentration, temperature, impurities and aeration flip the answer — the same acid name can be pumped in steel at one strength and demand an exotic alloy at another.

Wetted part groupAvailable options noted in current source
Casing / impeller / cover or seal chamberWCB, 316SS/CF8M, CD4MCu, Alloy 20/CN7M, Monel, Nickel, Hastelloy, Titanium
Shaft / sleeveSAE 4140 and selected corrosion-resistant alloys, depending on arrangement
Additional wet-end optionZirconium alloy

A material name is not a compatibility conclusion. Provide liquid composition, concentration, temperature, pressure, impurities and corrosion conditions for review — the material input checklist prepares that review.

Seal and Shaft Options

Sealing decisions travel together: chamber, sealing device and shaft arrangement form one system, and they are reviewed as one.

Seal environment

Packed-box or mechanical-seal wet ends with standard, large-bore and taper-bore seal chamber configurations. State the liquid’s solids content, vapour behaviour and any flush-water constraints in the enquiry — they decide which chamber gives the seal the environment it needs.

Shaft arrangements

Sleeve and sleeve-less shaft arrangements in several shaft and sleeve alloys. A sleeved shaft puts a renewable wear surface under the sealing device; a solid shaft maximises stiffness at the seal faces. The final arrangement is matched to the liquid, pressure, temperature and site sealing requirements during review.

Installation Dimensions

Reference installation dimensions for the G196: the outline elevation locates the pump on the ANSI dimensional grid, the foot plan carries the mounting-hole pattern. Confirm against a certified drawing for your specific size and configuration before construction — the letters on the drawings are the vocabulary a dimensional review is conducted in.

G196 General Purpose FAQ

What information is needed to select a G196 pump?

Send normal, minimum and maximum flow, required head, liquid composition and concentration, specific gravity, viscosity, temperature, solids, suction conditions and motor supply. The duty point and the liquid decide everything downstream — size, materials, seal environment and the curve the selection is confirmed on.

Can the pump be selected for a corrosive chemical from the chemical name alone?

No. Material and seal suitability depend on concentration, temperature, impurities, pressure and the complete operating conditions. The same acid name can be pumped in steel at one strength and demand an exotic alloy at another — send the liquid data, not just the liquid name.

Do the published maximums apply to every size?

No. They describe the G196 series envelope. The selected size and configuration determine the actual allowable operating range, which is confirmed on the reviewed, size-specific curve.

How does a size code like 3×4-8 read?

Discharge × suction − nominal impeller diameter, in inches: 3-inch discharge, 4-inch suction, nominal 8-inch impeller. STX and XLTX follow from the size; MTX or LTX is confirmed from the nameplate. Letter suffixes such as G and H mark variants in the source list — confirm the exact designation during review. Conversion to Durco-pattern strings is in ANSI pump size codes.

What does the open impeller’s external adjustment do in service?

As wear opens the impeller clearance, head and efficiency drift down. The external adjustment restores the clearance with the pump assembled and in place, recovering performance between overhauls without breaking the pipework or stripping the wet end.

Which seal chamber arrangement is right for my service?

It depends on the sealing device, liquid, solids, pressure and temperature. Standard-bore chambers suit clean liquids with packing or simple seals; large-bore and taper-bore chambers give the seal more volume and better solids or vapour behaviour. The chamber is confirmed together with the sealing plan during review, not chosen from the name alone.

What should be included in an RFQ?

Include duty point, fluid data, material and seal preferences, motor voltage/frequency, quantity, baseplate and coupling scope, inspection or documentation needs, destination and delivery target. The on-page form below carries the initial request; drawings and nameplate photos can follow during review.

Can YSM review an existing model or part number?

Yes. Send the reference, drawing, nameplate photo or sample information. Final cross-reference conclusions require technical and commercial review — a reference number alone is not treated as a fit conclusion.

Can you supply replacement parts for an installed pump of this pattern?

Yes — the complete wet end and power end are manufactured in house, and the Replacement Parts Center carries coverage, materials and ordering steps. For obsolete or undocumented parts, the reverse-engineering path works from a drawing, sample or dimensioned photographs.

Are OEM or branded (ODM) orders supported?

Yes — OEM and ODM programmes are part of the standard offer (see About YSM Pumps). Branding, documentation and packaging requirements enter the same technical-commercial review as the pump itself; state them in the enquiry rather than after order.

How is pricing confirmed?

Quotations are issued against a reviewed selection — size and frame, materials, sealing, scope and quantity — not against a model name alone, which is why no public price list exists for the family. Send the duty data and requirements; the quotation then references the size-specific configuration it prices.

What are the lead time and warranty for this pump?

Typical lead time is 4 weeks for a complete pump, 2 weeks for a bare wet end and 1 week for replacement parts, from deposit and approved drawings. Warranty is 12 months from shipment against defects in materials and workmanship within the reviewed duty. Late shipment attributable to YSM is compensated at 0.5% of contract value per week, capped at 5%.

What are the payment and delivery terms?

30% T/T deposit within 7 days of order, 70% T/T before shipment, or irrevocable L/C at sight; export-grade wooden-case packing; any Incoterms 2020 term (EXW Zibo, FOB Qingdao, CIF, DAP/DDP) as agreed in the quotation. Factory witness testing and third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) are accepted. Full terms: Commercial Terms

The form below carries the initial request; drawings, nameplate photos and any remaining data can follow during review. The technical review uses, where available: the duty point (normal, minimum and maximum flow with required head), liquid composition, concentration, temperature, specific gravity, viscosity, solids, suction conditions, material preference, seal arrangement, motor voltage and frequency, quantity, baseplate and coupling scope, inspection or documentation needs, destination and target delivery date. For replacement work, add the existing model, frame and ANSI size, the reference number and a nameplate photo.

Open “Add technical details” to fill in what you know, and mark anything uncertain as unknown — a marked gap is reviewable, a silent one is not.

G196 General Purpose Selection Decision Guide

Selection boundaries save both sides a review cycle: the fastest quotation starts on the right page. The general-purpose model is the family default; the lists below mark where a different starting point serves the duty better. Crossing a boundary is not a downgrade — a different family is simply a different answer to a different duty.

Start with this page when

  • An ANSI/ASME B73.1 open-impeller process pump is the preferred starting point and the duty sits inside the published coverage.
  • The enquiry involves a complete pump, bare wet end or parts against an existing G196-style reference.
  • Open-impeller external adjustment and back pull-out maintenance access matter to the plant’s maintenance philosophy.
