What Information Is Needed Before Replacing an ANSI Process Pump?
A pump manufacturer can select an ANSI replacement more quickly when the installed equipment, process duty and required supply scope are clearly identified. This is especially important when ordering a replacement that must be dimensionally interchangeable with an existing 3196-type or Mark III-type pump of the same size and group.
Use the checklist below for a complete pump, bare pump, wet end, rotating assembly or replacement part. If an item is unknown, mark it as unknown and send the available photos, nameplate or drawings.
1. Nameplate and Installed Model
Provide a clear nameplate photo and record the original manufacturer, model, pump size, frame or Group, serial number, rated flow, head, speed, impeller diameter and construction code. Include motor power, voltage, frequency, speed and frame when the motor is in scope.
Wide photos of the pump, baseplate, piping, coupling, guard and seal area help the replacement manufacturer identify the complete installation.
2. Duty Point and Speed
State the normal, minimum and maximum flow with the corresponding required head. Include operating speed and frequency. For a VFD-controlled pump, provide the normal speed range. Send the original datasheet, performance curve, system curve or operating records when available.
3. Liquid and Operating Conditions
- Chemical composition and concentration
- Normal and maximum temperature
- Specific gravity and viscosity
- Solids content, particle size and abrasiveness
- Vapor pressure or tendency to flash
- Suction pressure, discharge pressure and available NPSH
- Continuous or intermittent operation, cleaning and upset conditions
4. Materials and Sealing
Provide the installed wetted materials for the casing, impeller, cover, shaft, sleeve and fasteners where known. State whether the replacement should remain like-for-like or whether corrosion, erosion or repeated failure requires a material review.
Identify packing or mechanical seal, seal manufacturer and model, chamber or stuffing-box type, single or dual arrangement, piping plan, barrier or buffer fluid, and sleeve and gasket materials.
5. Dimensions, Baseplate and Piping
Confirm whether the existing baseplate, motor, coupling, guard and piping will remain. Provide a general arrangement drawing or measured dimensions. Important checks include flange positions, shaft centerline height, foot pattern, coupling location, motor frame, nozzle orientation, flange rating and maintenance clearance.
ANSI/ASME B73.1 standardizes important external dimensions. The correct model, size, frame or Group still identifies which interchangeable configuration the manufacturer should supply.
6. Drawings, Part Numbers and Samples
For replacement parts, provide the OEM part number and position number, pump model, size, frame or Group, part description, quantity, material, drawing, photos and tolerances. A sample may be useful when no reliable drawing exists.
7. Inspection and Documentation
State the required documents before quotation: certified general arrangement drawing, performance curve, material test report, PMI, hydrostatic test record, dimensional inspection, balancing report, NDE, coating requirements, quality plan, third-party inspection, packing and marking.
8. Delivery and Commercial Scope
Define whether the request is for a complete pump, bare pump, wet end, rotating assembly or individual parts. State whether motor, baseplate, coupling, guard, seal and accessories are included, plus quantity, destination, delivery terms, shutdown priority and required spare parts.
Send the Information to an ANSI Pump Manufacturer
YSM manufactures ANSI/ASME B73.1 chemical process pumps and non-OEM replacement parts in China. The G196 and D Mark III programmes are replacement routes for 3196-type and Mark III-type installations, dimensionally interchangeable with pumps of the same size and group.
Goulds, 3196, Durco and Mark III are trademarks of their respective owners. YSM is independent and is not affiliated with, authorized by, sponsored by or endorsed by the trademark owners. Brand references identify the corresponding installed equipment and replacement application.
